My friend July is a Christian and she told us about Cathedrals in great detail. We were now quite excited to visit one. The world famous Cathedral is situated in the place called Maidan in the city of Kolkata. It was built in the year 1847 though the building was started in 1839. This cathedral was linked with Anglican Communion. Its historical significance has resulted in its being one of the most visited places in the city. Besides the people from local, national and international Christian community, people belonging to other religious groups also visit this popular place.
The cathedral is supposed to be of two hundred and forty seven feet in length and its width is eighty one feet. The main or the central hall is very enormous and it encompasses carved pews, which are made of solid wood and the walls are enclosed with sketches and artwork, which are very colorful and mesmerizing. The Cathedral is nestled amongst enormous ground and the setting seemed very soothing and tranquil. We also lit candles over there after our friend prompted that it was the custom to light candles.
The time at St. Paul’s Cathedral Kolkata was well spent and we had a good time; our next plan was to visit another church and we left the place with excitement.
