The utter beauty of colors blinded us – a natural mosaic of greens, yellows and browns that merged into a beautiful pattern. Even the muddy roads seemed picturesque. We watched the mangrove forests, paddy fields, and traditional coconut trees which lined the canals and lakes with great enthusiasm.
Floating through the waters, suddenly, a narrow creek appeared out of nowhere. We took a short detour and followed the stream, cutting through the undergrowth of plants until it turned into a vast expanse of water. The boat staff informed us that we had reached our destination, The Vembanad Lake.
The Vembanad Lake is a charming picnic spot and also a fast developing backwater tourism destination which provides boating, fishing and sightseeing experiences that are truly exciting.

The Lake links the villages and the islands of Kottayam and is also one of the largest lakes in Kerala. The best way to explore the lake and the backwaters of Kerala is through the sailing across it. It one of the most unique travel experiences where most of the daily activities are done in a unique and different way.
To effectively enjoy the experience of the lake we had hired a house boat which took us through across the lake. Our first glance of the Vembanad Lake was breathtaking. The endless expanse of blues of the lake water, with hints of green of the lake it made for a relaxing sight.
Passing the dainty water lilies, water hyacinths made us feel like we were in whole new world. It felt like a floating garden. As we were sailing towards Azhapuzha (or Alleppey), we passed several bunch of islands and farms separated by a web of lagoons.

We also tried an attempt to fish, but the local fish seemed out of reach, though we really enjoyed the joy and the suspense of fishing.
One of the most mesmerizing facts about the experience at the Lake Vembanand is the silence, for hours together all we could hear were the soft sounds of the waves the boats sailing across.
