One of the highly recommended places to visit in Kerala is the Periyar National Park. Whenever we asked people about popular sightseeing places, the national park always topped this list.
It is located in the interiors of Thekkady which is quite far from Kottayam. Upon enquiring at the front desk we were advised to take the local bus which would directly take us to the national park.

The bus timing were erratic, it left at hourly gaps, so upon waiting for half an hour more we finally got into the bus. The national park is huge, and unlike the other national parks which only offer a glimpse of the forest and wild animals. This one has several activities which the visitor can enjoy.
Among the vast expanse of the forests there is a beautiful lake nestled in the middle of the national park. One of the popular activities done here is taking about ride across the lake in hopes of spotting wild life. Luckily we spotted quite many on the hour and a half long boat ride. The boat ride requires no prior booking, though since it was the tourist season there was a huge line for the tickets.

Another popular activity at the park is the Bamboo Rafting, which is a daylong activity which unfortunately requires prior booking, since we weren’t aware of this, we take to miss it.
But apart from it there are several more activities which can be done to enjoy the natural habitat at its best. After the boat ride the next thing we did is the natures walk, which is a walk through the part of the park where tigers habitat.

Since we feared getting lost in the huge place, we decided to take a guide. The fee for the walk in the natures parks in Rs. 200/- person, additional for the guide. Our guide Raju was quite efficient and knowledgeable. He guided us to the right places where tigers and other wildlife could be seen.
Though we didn’t spot a tiger, we spotted the Nilgiry Rangoon the family of Nilgiri Langoor hanging around, on a tree, the Sambar deer drinking from the lake Squirrels. All in all it was an entertaining and thrilling experience.
